Wheel Bearings, Hubs & Brake Drums

Inspection and repair of trailer hubs, wheel bearings and brake drums, including play, noise, heat, contamination and corrosion concerns.

Wheel Bearings, Hubs & Brake Drums

Bearings are small components carrying a large responsibility

Wheel bearings support the trailer load and allow each wheel to rotate freely. Wear, contamination, incorrect adjustment or lubrication problems can lead to noise, play, heat and eventually serious failure.

When hubs or brake drums are removed during suitable service work, the bearing and sealing arrangement can be inspected alongside the brakes.

Symptoms worth investigating

Noticeable wheel play, roughness when rotating the wheel, rumbling, a hub becoming unusually hot, grease contamination, damaged seals or a history of water ingress all justify closer inspection.

Brake drag can also heat a hub, so diagnosis should consider both braking and bearing systems rather than assuming one component is responsible.

Hubs and drums

Brake drums need to be assessed for condition as well as the shoes that run inside them. Corrosion, wear or damage can affect braking performance and the quality of a rebuild.

Central Scotland Trailer Servicing Centre is workshop-based in Tillicoultry and is operated by JRGM Technical Services LLP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a trailer wheel bearing is failing?

Common warning signs include play, roughness, rumbling or abnormal heat, but a bearing can deteriorate without dramatic symptoms. Inspection is the reliable way to assess it.

Does a hot hub always mean a bad bearing?

No. Brake drag can also generate heat. The brake and bearing should be considered together during diagnosis.

Can bearings be checked during a service?

Yes, bearing condition is an important part of trailer running-gear servicing and is assessed as appropriate to the hub design and work being carried out.
