Trailer Electrics & Lighting

Trailer lighting and 12V fault finding including 7-pin and 13-pin plugs, damaged cable, junctions, lamp faults and intermittent connections.

Trailer Electrics & Lighting

Trailer electrical faults are often mechanical as well as electrical

Trailer wiring lives in a harsh environment: water, road dirt, vibration, repeated flexing and exposed connectors. A lighting fault may be a bulb or lamp, but it can also be corrosion, damaged cable, poor earth continuity, a plug fault or a previous repair that has deteriorated.

Because CSTSC is operated by JRGM Technical Services LLP, the site can draw on the wider business’s vehicle electrical experience while keeping the work focused on trailer systems.

7-pin and 13-pin trailer connections

We can investigate faults at common trailer plugs and the trailer-side wiring, including damaged pins, poor connections and cable defects. Where a fault appears to be on the towing vehicle rather than the trailer, we can identify that distinction before unnecessary trailer parts are fitted.

Lighting repairs can include road lamps, marker lights, number-plate lights and associated wiring as appropriate to the trailer.

Intermittent faults

Intermittent trailer lights are often the most frustrating. Testing the circuit while checking connectors, cable routing and earth paths is more useful than simply replacing a lamp and hoping the problem has gone.

Central Scotland Trailer Servicing Centre is workshop-based in Tillicoultry and is operated by JRGM Technical Services LLP.

Frequently asked questions

Can you repair 7-pin trailer plugs?

Yes. We can inspect and repair or replace common trailer-side 7-pin connections where appropriate.

Can you work on 13-pin trailer wiring?

Yes. We can diagnose common trailer-side 13-pin connector and wiring faults.

All the lights work until the trailer moves. What causes that?

Movement-related faults often point to damaged wiring, loose connections, corrosion or poor earth continuity. The circuit needs testing rather than assuming the lamp itself is faulty.

Can you tell whether the fault is on the car or trailer?

In many cases, yes. Separating tow-vehicle faults from trailer-side faults is an important first step in diagnosis.
